QUESTION:I am getting ready to move and need to buy moving boxes. The only place
I can think of to buy them is U-Haul and the storage warehouse. Am I
overlooking anyplace, especially any place that might offer just as good
boxes better prices?
ANSWER: Visit the produce department of your local grocery stores and ask if they
have any empty fruit boxes. The best type to get are the types they ship
apples and oranges in. The upper half slides down over the lower half. They
are very sturdy, and will hold up long after moving is over. Most stores
collapse and recycle their boxes these days, so you have to get them before
they get around to collapsing them. If you don't want free fruit boxes, you should be able to pick up boxes at
any office supply store like Office Max, Office Depot, or Staples. Of course,
it'll cost you... If you think you'll have a use for the boxes after moving, you may want to
look into plastic storage boxes. They're expensive (about $10 each), but they
are sturdy and keep out water. Over the years, we replaced our free fruit
boxes with the plastic ones. These are far too expensive just for moving, but
if you are storing stuff after the move, they might make sense.
