Basket press basket cleaning and storage?
QUESTION:Basket press basket cleaning and storage?
I am finding some mold on the wooden basket of my press, which I can
only assume was from last year's harvest. I cleaned the wood with
high pressure hot water until it looked clean to me. I dried it
outside in sun.
What should I be doing differently in terms of cleaning to prevent
this in the future? Should I store the basket separately somehow?
ANSWER: Personally, I recommend a couple of coats of Man O' War varnish. Wait until
you're done with this year's crush though. This is a good project for late
next Spring, after the wood has dried out thoroughly and far enough ahead of
the crush that the varnish will have thoroughly dried..
