I am interested to know if anybody is using an external hard drive for site storage

QUESTION:

I am interested to know if anybody is using an external hard drive for site storage. I want to know if USB2 is fast enough for you, and how it compares with Firewire in your experience.

ANSWER:

-I've used an external USB2 hard drive, not for site storage but for storing multimedia sound and video files. That's probably more demanding than web stuff would ever be and USB2 was plenty fast enough. I've not used Firewire, but I've been told that USB2 is just as fast. I dunno. I've never placed a demand on the drive that it didn't meet just fine.
-I use an external hard drive and have never used firewire; I wasn't even aware of it when I made my purchase.
I don't like to rely on backup functions that I can't "see," like Ghost. I like to be able to copy my files to an external hard drive, then view them, to make sure they're actually there. Plus, I can store it in a friend's house, just in case my apartment burns to the ground, is raided by Homeland Security, or gets swallowed up in our next earthquake.
Actually, I'd like to have TWO external drives, one of which I could keep in a remote location. And if I had two computers or operating systems, I'd probably have more, unless you can back up Windows, Apple and Linux files on the same hard drive.
