QUESTION:I realize that considering buying a storage/shelving unit retail is hardly
frugal but I am desperately in need of a large and sturdy storage unit/system
that I can put against one wall in the living room of my tiny over cluttered
apartment. I was looking through the latest IKEA catalog and they sell a system
that you can design yourself to suit your needs and space requirements - its
called the "Ivar" system and they describe it in detail at their web site (www.ikea.com). I'm wondering if anyone has actually purchased these and if
they are happy with them. Also, does anyone have any other frugal ideas for how
I can create an entire wall of storage in a frugal way (a toddler lives here so
it must be sturdy, and I need it to have a space to hold a TV set and a
desk/computer area.
ANSWER: I just installed one 16 foot section of IVAR and one 8 foot corner unit
in our church library. (at $1200 it was a lot less expensive than any
other alternative we priced)It's OK, but if you are at all handy I would
suggest taking a look at the design and seeing how you could do it
yourself. All it is really is 2 x 4 posts with small braces in between
and holes drilled every inch. You hang the shelves off dowels that fit
in the holes.
Major caveat... if you buy it get a cross-brace for every section, and
not every other one as they suggest. Also, if you have kids or pets
forget the little straps they have to strap the unit to the wall. Buy
proper steel strapping and strap it to parts of the wall with studs
under the drywall.
