QUESTION:We've used our fireplace about twice in 16 years. Meanwhile, we've
got a big need in that area for storage shelving.
Has anybody ever seen a storage/shelving product which fits into a
fireplace? Ideally, it would have a fake brick front, an arc at the
top, and fills the entire fire place space. We'd want to keep the fireplace as a feature, in case we ever sell the
house...
ANSWER: In order to achieve a perfect fit, and get the style you want, you will have
to have it custom-made. Custom-made doesn't necessarily mean expensive.
Sketch up an idea of what you want, showing total height, depth and width
then take it with you when you speak to a couple of cabinetmakers in your
area. Make sure to discuss different options for achieving a similar look,
because that is when the ideas on how to keep costs down will come about.
Also mention that you want it to be a free-standing piece that can just be
slid into the fireplace opening.
