I have server performance reports delivered to me as I am based off site that warn me that the auto-started service "Removable Storage" is not running

QUESTION:

We have a USB HDD that is being used for a weekly backup of the whole server. The backup is scheduled for a Friday and the device is only connected on that day before being held off site. I have server performance reports delivered to me as I am based off site that warn me that the auto-started service "Removable Storage" is not running. I assumed this to be because the removable storage device had been removed. However when the USB HDD was plugged back in the service didn't start. Should it have restarted on re-introduction of the HDD, or maybe the problem is that the service shouldn't have stopped in the first place?

ANSWER:

Set Removeable Storage service to Manual, which is the default. It will be started when it's needed, like if ntbackup runs, or if you go to the Storage node of Advanced Management and expand the section. RSM shuts down when not in use, so having the service set to automatic causes the monitoring to fire off an alert when it stops, as monitoring believes that any service set to Automatic should always be running. Plugging in a USB drive isn't going to start RSM. In our minds, a USB is 'removeable storage', but in Windows mind, it's simply a hard disk drive and shows up in disk managment, not removeable storage. The reason RSM starts when ntbackup runs isn't because you have a USB drive, it's because ntbackup needs RSM to enumerate any removeable drives in the system.
