QUESTION:I'm a novice artist blacksmith working on setting up my forge. Among other
things, I want to build a steel storage rack. I'm thinking of building this
to be either free-standing or bolted into the wall. Of the two, I'd rather
bolt it to the wall to save floor space. I've searched the web looking for
examples of steel racks in other shops and forges. I'm interested in what
other people have used (tubing, angle iron?), how it's supported and general
dimensions. If you have any suggestions, recommendations, or pictures of
your storage racks, I would really appreciate it.
ANSWER: I made mine free-standing, but it sits up against the wall. if I feel
like it I can move it around without as much anguish, and I don't have to
worry about the cantilevered weight of the steel pulling my wall down. A
buddy of mine who is a cabinetmaker uses cantilevered racking on one wall of
his shop, and it has pulled his wall a couple of degrees out of plumb.
That's a lot of stress on a building.
