QUESTION:The UA Storage Facility
I've heard talk of this facility housing soundtracks and other misc. paraphernalia.
Where is it and can anyone go searching through this facility?
ANSWER: I seem to recall this subject coming up before and nobody was any the
wiser. The UA Bond music material, which a large bulk of it was recorded
at CTS in London, maybe still be stored at Capitol Records possibly
until this dispute is settled with EMI.
I am sure there are people on the list that can elaborate on this.
During the golden era, UA was basically a rental studio (Samuel Goldwyn
Studios in Hollywood) and independent companies did their post
production there. A good example was the Mirisch Corporation who
released all their motion pictures thru UA. The dubbing materials were
only on the lot for a limited time and probably only Walter Mirisch, who
has an office at Universal, very possibly might provide an answer to
where they went. My guess is that except for the most important
materials, e.g master sound negative and mag or optical music and
effects tracks-usually combined, have probably been dumped or degaussed
and reclaimed. The other possibility is that a major television company
that licenced a lot of these features for broadcast may house these
materials in their own facilities and the studio concerned never
bothered to claim the material back. Until an investigation such as this
can be carried out to prove otherwise the chances are we will never have
an answer.
