QUESTION:Data storage options - Rochester NY
Anyone have any suggestions on data storage facilities in the Rochester
area? I'm currently using Iron Mountain (formerly SafeSite) to store
selected backup media offsite. Iron Mountain provides a climate controlled
vault, but then delivers our tapes in a van without adequate heating. The
result in the winter, is a box of frozen backup tapes. After multiple
complaints, the problem is still unresolved.
ANSWER: Permitted to assume room temperature, there shouldn't be an issue with tape
media being exposed to cold temperatures. The problem comes from attempting
to use them before they have warmed to room temperature - condensation can
result and then they get sticky. I've dealt with broadcast media tapes for
years, including stuff shipped from the Deep Freeze that is Moscow, and
they've never been damaged by cold exposure, just so long as it reaches room
temperature before use.
