QUESTION:

Since I have branched out into premium tobaccos I am now faced with the problem of storage. With bulk tobacco I use glass stackable storage containers that are surprisingly airtight. But now, with opened tins and cans, what about storage? I may not buy enough of certain tobaccos to justify its own jar, so, how airtight are the tins and cans with rubber tops? Any ideas for storing small amounts (100 grams or so). My apologies if this has been covered before.

ANSWER:

the tins with a rubber seal are fine for extended storage, but the catch is, you have to keep the top pressed down against the bottom tightly enough to make a moisture proof seal. I've found rubber bands stretched around a tin do a good job. The one caveat is that the airspace can't be too great. Zip lock bags just don't restrict moisture passage to the required degree, and they don't inhibit the volatile oils that are an important constituent. A glass jar with a rubber seal, with minimum head space, is the best bet.
