Woman "Explains" Dead Babies Found in Storage Unit
QUESTION:PHOENIX (AP) - A woman who rented a storage unit where the remains of three
infants were found last week told investigators that they were all born
full-term two decades ago but died shortly after their births, the sheriff
said.
Diane O'Dell, who lives in Rome, Pa., told investigators that between the 1960s
and 1984, while living in upstate New York, she gave birth to four children who
died, including the three whose remains were found abandoned in a storage shed
in Safford, said Graham County Sheriff Frank Hughes.
"What she told our investigators was that all the babies were born full-term
and then died within hours," Hughes said Monday.
No charges were filed in Arizona and officials here have turned the case over
New York authorities, he said. New York State Police were to hold an afternoon
news conference to announce an arrest and charges.
Authorities interviewed O'Dell in Pennsylvania over the weekend after
identifying her through records at Customer Storage Rentals.
Graham County Attorney Kenneth Angle said O'Dell told investigators she had
given birth to the first baby in the late 1960s or early 1970s, when she was
about 16. After the baby died, he said, O'Dell put the body in a plastic bag
and then a suitcase.
In 1989, New York authorities discovered the infant's remains and investigated
the death, but no charges were filed, Angle said.
Between 1981 and 1984, O'Dell gave birth in New York to the three babies found
in Safford, Angle said. O'Dell told investigators those babies also died
shortly after their births.
According to the sheriff's office, O'Dell carried the remains with her from New
York through several states before storing them in the Safford shed when she
lived in the area between 1991 and 1992.
She also told investigators that she thought the owner of the storage company
had thrown out the contents of the shed in 1994 - the same year she last paid
rent on the unit, Hughes said.
He said O'Dell currently has eight living children.
Investigators also questioned her partner, Robert Sauerstein. The only phone
number listed for a Robert Sauerstein in Pennsylvania was not in service
Monday. There was no number for O'Dell.
Pennsylvania State Police declined to comment on the case.
ANSWER: -Maybe she got tired of carrying around all that luggage. The live ones
can at least eventually walk on their own. This woman has given birth
to 12 full-term babies. Do you think she's figured out yet how babies
are made? -This is just plain wrong. Why should they arrest her? She didn't do
anything wrong. The kids died on their own and she's raised 8 healthy kids.
This is jut another example of a male dominated society passing
judgement on matters they have no knowlege of. Same thing with poor Andrea Yates. When will we ever learn?
