QUESTION:Wood storage in Houston
I have the option to store the hardwood I have in the garage or in the house
with A/C. All of my work is either outside on a shaded back porch or a
garage that is disconnected from the house. Should I store the wood in the
garage or in the house to prevent warpage, etc. Occasionally I do some glue
ups inside because it is easier that way, is this a wise thing to do as
well? What with the moving from humid to non humid. Remember...this is Texas.
ANSWER: -I have live along the Texas coast all my life.
Almost all hard wood sold in Houston is kept in an out side atmosphere
environment some times for years. Warping is going to be more affected by
how you store vs. where you store it.
I suggest you lay it flat with plenty of support OFF the floor in your
garage and away from near by doors or windows. For the last 25 years I have
had no problems with storing wood in my garage, in Houston. -I'm about 15 miles from the beach on the Texas?Louisiana border and all of
my wood is stored on my open patio.....no protection from the elements other
than the roof. I've never had a problem with warping in hard woods. Pine
will turn into a pretzel, but I've had some pieces of red oak and pecan out
there for a few years (lying flat of course) that haven't warped in the slightest.
