VSS and Storage association in use and can't be deleted

QUESTION:

Running SB2003 with VSS running on volume D:\ (with 7934 MB on volume d:\). Volume C:\ shows that shadow copies are disabled, however, "Used" is showing 10664 MB on D:\. When I try and disable the Shadow copies on C:\ again I receive error: "Failed to remove the storage area assaociation for volume C:\. Error 0x8004231d: The specified shadow copy storage association is in use and so can't be deleted."

ANSWER:

Before we go any further, can I assume that you enable the shadow copy on volume D and you want to free up the space on the volume D. Based on my research, you can only change the storage volume when there are no shadow copies present. If you need to change the storage volume for a volume that has already been enabled, you must first delete all of the shadow copies on that volume. By default, the shadow copies will be cleaned when disabling Volume Shadow Copy on the related volume. As alternative, we can delete it by running "vssadmin delete shadows" command. In order to solve this issue, please follow the steps below:
1. Reset the limit for the Volume shadow copy for the volume C to 100 MB, and then the system will delete the files automatically.
2. Disable the volume shadow copy service on the volume C. In addition, if you have not applied the hotfix below, please apply this hotfix: 833167 A Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) update package is available for Windows Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;833167 More info: 838421 How to configure the Shadow Copies of Shared Folders feature on a Windows Server 2003-based server cluster file share http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;838421 I hope the above information helps; if you have any other concerns please let me know. I am standing by to be of further assistance.
