I have been unsuccessful getting an answer
from the Sterlite company (if India) as to whether or not their
storage containers are made from food-safe plastics.
QUESTION:I bought several Sterlite containers with the intention of using them
for emergecy water storage. I have been unsuccessful getting an answer
from the Sterlite company (if India) as to whether or not their
storage containers are made from food-safe plastics. Emails to thier
corporate offices in New Delhi, India have not been returned, or even
acknowledged.
The containers are marked with that 3-arrow recycling icon, with PP
below it and the numeral "5" inside the icon.
Does anyone know?
ANSWER: -I'm afraid if the manufacturer can't (or won't) tell you then
it's going to be mighty difficult to know for sure. The recycling
symbol and number only indicates the general plastic type the
container is made from and does not necessarily indicate whether it's food safe. -One solution if storing food is bagging the food in ziploc and other
plastic storage bags and placing in the totes. For water, lining the totes
with poly tarps first and filling with water. Most Rubbermaid and other
storage totes can only be filled halfway because the water pressure
causes the containers to bow outward.I've used them for aquaria purposes
like holding feeder fish and as fry growout tanks, and the fish were
healthy, but unsure if plastics used might be harmful to water for human consumption.
