Has anyone constructed storage devices of their own for alot less money? What about huge rubbermaid storage containers or other ideas?

QUESTION:

I have a few questions. I just got some new eyepieces and plan to store them in my Orion small accessory case, but is that enough? They do not have lens caps or any singular storage units of their own. Is anything additional really required? What about dust, etc? Also, I will be picking up my new LX10 in a few weeks and I'm pondering a case to store it in. I cant really justify right now spending almost $300 for the hard cases available from the big manufacturers. Has anyone constructed storage devices of their own for alot less money? What about huge rubbermaid storage containers or other ideas?

A: Small wonder. Try your local hardware store, and look for foot lockers. Then get some big faom rubber blocks and cut them to size. Heck, you can use large squares of the stuff, one or two per side - it doesn't have to win beauty points. However, I hear tell that some foam rubber outgasses fumes that can be harmful to your coatings. I'm sure you can find some store that sells the stuff, and would know what types don't. The case could be around $100 (or less, if on sale), maybe $30 for the foam, if custom cut (a friend of mine did had that done). Q: Has anyone constructed storage devices of their own for alot less money? What about huge rubbermaid storage containers or other ideas?
A: Yes, although not for the LX10. I'm using 6" ABS thin wall pipe with thick wall end caps for my C102HD, and I constructed compartmentws out of corrugated cardboard and paper packing tape to form inside the tray of a plastic tool chest for many of my accessories - one for basic setup for the C14 and all visual stuff, and one for the video and photographic stuff. Another one for the C8's stuff. The tool boxes are cheap, the constuction is fun on a rainy.
