Do most of you folks rent a small storage unit, or maybe buy a storage
trailer and park it in RV storage yard?
QUESTION:My wife and I are getting ready to take the plunge once again.
Years ago we had a 36' ketch that we used a lot in SE Alaskam but we
owned a home at the same time and never worried about storing our
belongings. They were always safe at home. This time, we plan on
selling one of our homes, renting the other and taking off for a few
years on the boat. The problem is what to do with all of our personal
treasures and keepsakes?
We plan to get rid of most of our belongings, but there are always a
few things that we as humans want to keep because they mean a lot to
us and we feel we will want them when we return to life ashore.
We have a couple antique pieces of furniture, framed art work & family
pictures, and a couple other odds and ends. Not much really.
Leaving them at our rental is out of the question and I dont' feel too
good asking to dump them off on family members.
Do most of you folks rent a small storage unit, or maybe buy a storage
trailer and park it in RV storage yard? I live in Alaska and storage
units up here are really expensive. I haven't checked prices in the
lower 48 yet.
I'd really like to hear how you folks have addressed this problem and
maybe an idea of about much your solution costs...
ANSWER: Find a good local moving and storage company. They will properly pack and
store your valuables with insurance. A self storage facility is great if you
need to get in and out a lot, but for long term safe storage, a professional
furniture storage warehouse is the place to be. Do your homework, pick on
reputation and references, not just price.
Will you end up back in Alaska, or do you think you will be someplace else when
it is time to return? Maybe it would be smart to move the contents to where
you will be going. This could save you money in the long run if the
warehousing is really that expensive in Alaska.
