QUESTION:I am about to buy another bike, but I want to put it in a public self
storage facility until I sell my old one. I havnt had a chance to price
these facities yet. I am in Md. Any idea what I can expect to pay per
month?
ANSWER: I currently rent space at a public storage facility in Salinas, CA. I pay
$125.00 per month for a 10' x 10' space and the facility does allow storage
of motor vehicles. The condition is that they must run, they are currently
registered and they must have current liability insurance. The facility is a
*very* secure facility. It has alarms on each space that is set with a
personal code that I enter into a keypad when I open the main gate at the
facility. Each space also has at least one fire sprinkler head in it. The
perimeter of the facility is protected with 10' walls (and cameras along the
wall). There is only one entrance, at the road side of the facility. The
gate at the entrance is electric and is opened with a keypad. Renters have
limited access between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. (I think week days have different
hours). There is a full-time guard that lives on the premises so someone is
there 24 hours a day. To enter the facility you use your personal security
code to open the main gate but at the same time, it turns off the alarm to
your personal space. When you exit the facility, the alarm is reset when you
enter your personal gate code to open the gate to get out (it does not open
automatically). They say that since most theft at public storage facilities
is from other renters, that keeps anyone from being able to get into my
space without setting the alarm off.
I just checked into renting a space in Colorado Springs, CO. They rent a
10'x40' space for $199.00 per month. I was told that it also has alarms but
is not 'climate controlled' (so says the person on the phone). They also
allow storage of motor vehicles.
Obviously, prices vary from state to state / area to area and not all
storage facilities allow you to store vehicles. So it's also obvious that
it's best to check your area to see for yourself.
