Advice on buying Virginia blends for storage
QUESTION:Advice on buying Virginia blends for storage
Since I currently have about eight Latakia blends opened, but only one Virginia (McClelland's #24) I am thinking about purchasing maybe 5 or 6 tins of Virginia
blends and storing them for a rainy day.
Question: What would you buy and from where would you purchase?
I am considering placing an order with the Tobacco Supermarket for some McC
Xmas 98, Black Shag, Dark Star and a couple others. Also, I emailed JR Tobacco
asking them if they carried Xmas Cheer or others not listed on their site, but
they never responded. The prices on what they carry is very good though. And
can anyone offer an opinion on McCranie's Red Flake? Pipetobacco.com has a
good selection, but to UPS 5 tins to me would cost $11 which seems pricey. And
PCCA would allow me to purchase XMAS Cheers 95-98 along with so many others
that I am awash in confusion. Please note that I have not tried any of these
blends that I am considering, so your advice is greatly appreciated.
ANSWER: McCranie's Red Flake is a great pure Virginian, very reasonably priced. The
Tobacco Supermarket (Royal Cigar) has McClelland's blends very reasonably
priced. Virginia Woods is very rich tasty, I recommend it, although it might be
lightly cased. I also like Rattray's Black Mallory, which I believe is
primarily Virginians, but I could be wrong. Rattray's Highland Targe seems to
be a blend of light Virginia with some Latakia thrown in. A blend that grows
on you, not a strong Latakia blends at all. Most recently I got a C&D sampler
with Riding the Raid (stoved red and lemon Virginians) and Woodstock Races (red
and lemon Virginians and Turkish). Riding the Raid is very good, probably be
great after a little more time to meld. For value, check out the C&D blends.
