Piano moving and storage question
QUESTION:I have a Samic Upright piano. I am going to be moving to a rental
house while my other house is being built. Can I move the piano my
self or should I call a piano mover and is climate controled storage
enough or does it need to be pluged in. The reason Im asking if I can
move it myself because my dad is too cheap to hire a piano mover.
ANSWER: I will give you pro's and cons of each:
Move it yourself: 1. You probably don't have a piano dolly to move it with. 2. There is a definite art and science to picking up the piano and moving it
without it falling over and getting damage. 3. If anyone helping you is injured, you will be liable.
Piano movers: 1. This is what they do every day, their experience will protect your
investment. 2. Their are insured and bonded. If something goes wrong with the move,
their insurance will cover it. 3. They will know the best way to lift and transport the piano.
I have helped a technician friend of mine move several upright pianos. It is
amazing how easy it is to move a piano that is properly attached to a
professional piano dolly. Without the proper tools and experience tt is a
very daunting task that I would not want to undertake with less experienced
people, including myself. If you value your piano, hire professionals.
As far as storage goes, it all depends on where you live and how long the
piano will have to be displaced. I have refinished several pianos and they
have been in my garage for extended periods(6 months) without any problems.
