Do you leave them in the original plastic cases and retrieve them as necessary or do you recommend building a storage unit to house them?

QUESTION:

I've got a quick question regarding the storage of smaller power tools. Tools like circular saw, cordless drills, plate joiner, angle grinder etc., where do you guys prefer to store these? Do you leave them in the original plastic cases and retrieve them as necessary or do you recommend building a storage unit to house them? Any ideas or suggestions very much appreciated. I've accumulated so many of these smaller tools that I'm thinking that maybe I should build something to keep them in rather than have them spread all over the shop hidden under benches and tables. Thanks for your input.

ANSWER:

-I have a large pile of plastic/metal boxes that inhabit a wall of my shop
(stacked, mostly). My friend built a large, lighted wall unit with a cubbyhole for each tool Each includes a piece of pegboard and small bin for storing the tools / spare parts / junk that seems to accumulate over time with each tool.
-Here's an idea that I use. I went to Lowe's and bought those plastic shelving brackets that form the joints for 2 x 4 shelves. You can usually find them at the end of the store aisles or the register. I paid $20 for 10 of them. Bought some 2 x 4s and built a unit 6' high and 8' long and 2' wide with 4 shelves. The unit is bolted to a wall and makes the ideal unobtrusive place to keep the plastic boxes. As far the power tools, I'm an old marine who believes that if you ain't using it, but it where it belongs. In other words, I keep the tools in the boxes they came in. Clean-up may be time consuming sometimes, but I at least I know where the tools and their accessories are!
