...but I don't want small tins for pantry storage.

QUESTION:

I was in Wal-Mart getting supplies and I saw empty decorative tins that you are supposed to fill for Christmas. Since I can never find these darn things any other time of the year, I picked up a few. They're about $1.70 each, the size of those large Danish cookie tins you see, and marked that they hold 3 pounds; 3 pounds of what, I don't know, but they stack easily, and hold a few cups of navy beans, peas, lentils, whole wheat berries, etc.. They tend to keep the bugs out, and things are relatively fresh if you rotate the eats in them regularly. There are more expensive tins there, but I didn't see a difference in anything except decoration, and there are smaller tins too, but I don't want small tins for pantry storage. There are also 1/2 gallon tins of popcorn with handles for sale. Didn't notice the price, since I'm set for larger tins and have switched over to the 18 gallon Rubbermaid tubs for food storage.

ANSWER:

I'm real fond of these acrylic "airtight" containers I get from K-Mart in 48, 64 and 96 oz. capacities. Seem to have a superb seal. More money certainly (4$, 5$ and 6$) but probably a bit more airtight container and they're clear so I know whats in them at a glance. Filled them with hot water and tried to get them to leak...no failures thus far.
