QUESTION:We had a nice snow/ice storm here in Cincinnati yesterday. It was not a lot
of fun chipping all the ice off the windows of my daily driver Sable Wagon
today. My boss offered to let me park my Beetle (for free) this winter, in a
storage bin that the company uses to store stuff as there would be enough room.
The storage bin is at one of these self storage places that you have all seen
with metal siding on the outside. I had heard that cars/stuff would rust parked
in a place like that. If that is the case, I will leave my 67 parked in my
garage the rest of the winter and scrape the snow and ice off my daily driver.
Does anyone else park any of their VWs in a place like that, and do you know if
cars would be more prone to rust there.
ANSWER: It really all depends on the humidity levels. If the structure has
convection ventilation (gable or soffit vents, storage spaces vented in
between) you shouldn't get much humidity buildup. Should be OK though
for the winter as humidity levels are usually pretty low when it is
cold. A good idea is to put a blue plastic tarp down underneath. You
might find the other suggestions in my "Mummifying" article useful too.
I recently revised that article.
