QUESTION:Zip drive - which one? Best storage solution?
I work in a very small office (3 work stations) for a non-profit
organization. We need a way to back up our hard drives for a minimal
cost. We are on a peer-to-peer network. I have an internal zip drive in
my tower, but I need to back up the hard drives for our other 2 work
stations, both lap tops. What is the best, most cost-efficient way to do
this? I was told an external zip drive for laptops. If this is true, what
make a model should I buy? Thanks for any help offered.
ANSWER: There are two models of the external ZIP drive you can buy -- USB and
parallel port. I would recommend the USB version as most new systems
have this connector. Of course, if you have some old systems (i.e.
Pentiums, 486s, etc) or some of your computers don't have USB ports then
you'll have to go for the parallel version.
There are also the 100 and 250MB version of the ZIP drive. I would bet
that your internal ZIP drive is the 100MB version. The 250MB version is
backwards compatible with the 100MB disks so if you get this version you
get to store more on fewer disks and can still read any existing disks
you have.
