QUESTION:

This topic is too big to just google up some hits. Way too much stuff out there to sift thru. I'm hoping to here what network storage solutions people are using and how they have worked out. My situation is home video shop for event videography. 3 main machines loaded for video work and a 4th main desktop (linux) for my other needs like mail, browsing etc on a gigabit lan. So like any videographer I'm feeling the need for storage, storage and storage. All three video machines have faily big drives but I'd like a centralized file storage/server. I'm thinking Terabyte or so.

ANSWER:

-While looking or an inexpensive storage tower to attach to my single pc, I ran across this from netgear. http://www.netgear.com/Products/Storage/NetworkStorage/SC101.aspx I've also seen Sata towers that allowed hotswapping removable drives, but that little netgear thing is avail for under $100.
-I use raw drives on a shelf and a USB2-to-IDE (or SATA) adapter cable. http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=2020&cat=CBL&cpc=CBLbsc IMHO, no other solution even comes close in terms of GB/$ or flexibility.
