I've seen ads for these storage places (Manhattan
Mini-storage, Chelsea storage, etc.),
QUESTION:One of my many problems:
Too much stuff, not enough apartment. (Possessions are a
terrible burden)
I need to find a place to store a couple of closets worth of
stuff. I've seen ads for these storage places (Manhattan
Mini-storage, Chelsea storage, etc.), but have never rented one before.
Anyone out there have expereience with any of these places and
would be willing to share tips? How are they priced, what are
the scams to look out for, are they all the same, etc.
ANSWER: Well, it's pretty straightforward. Just like renting an apartment. Look
at the storage space and look for anything that might damage your
property (water, etc). Ask for a rental agreement and read it carefully.
Sign it only if you are thoroughly convinced of what you are signing. Do
not pay ANY security deposit. They shouldn't require any.
I dunno about prices in Manhatten. I know Queens pretty well. I currently
rent storage space to a small business owner for $300 a month. He has a
rental agreement. No security deposit. If he doesn't pay me, I'll change
locks and keep his stuff as collateral. About 500 sq. feet.
