QUESTION:I am going to give up my rented space where I currently do woodworking.
I will move all of my tools to a self storage where they will stay for the next six
months to a year. The place is secure and dry, but I live in Dallas where it can
be very humid for extended periods of time. I am very concerned that without
giving constant attention to my Unisaw, planner and joiner, the surfaces will be
extensively rusted. What is the name, and where do I get the substance that came
on the tools when it arrived from the factory? Should they be wrapped or left in the
open air. Also, any opinions on the hand and powertools to be stored?
ANSWER: Clean and wax all large surfaces of cast iron on the table saw, planer, and joiner.
Grease the areas that had grease on them from the factory, and oil the areas
that didn't but you think might need it.
As for smaller hand tools, how about storing them in Ziploc freezer bags
with silica gel? Or oil them then seal them up in freezer bags. Do any of your
manuals give advice for long-term storage? Maybe you could email the
manufacturers and ask their advice. They'd damn sure know how to store them
safely. Hopefully you've gotten a better idea of what needs to be done.
