QUESTION:

I was planning to buy a bunch of the 1 gal containers MoreBeer sells
(http://morebeer.com/view_product/6467/102153) and then noticed they are not air tight. I have been under the impression that grain storage needs to be air tight for long term storage. Is this correct?

ANSWER:

-If you live in a high humidity climate like we do here in Nebraska, you really should have something relatively airtight. I keep mine in these containers. http://www.petsmart.com/global/product_detail.jsp?cm_ven=nextag&cm_ca... They have O-ring seals on the lids and wheels for easy moving. The largest size easily holds a 55 lb bag of grain with room to spare.
-It couldn't hurt, but I'm not sure it's essential. That said, if it's base malt for which I bought a whole sack, I'll keep unused grain in its original sack with the top of the sack twisted shut and a zip-tie or two cinched around it to keep it shut. Small amounts of grain (typically leftover specialty grains) get bagged with a FoodSaver (most likely overkill, but it's right on my kitchen counter and I try to reuse the bag material as much as I can).
