QUESTION:I'm looking for ideas on creative ways of making storage areas in my garage.
With my truck in the garage, there's no room on either end to place anything.
With the ceiling being 10 feet high, I was thinking about making wide
shelves(3-4 feet wide) about 7 feet up maybe even going around the entire
perimeter (garage door access notwithstanding) suspending one edge against the
wall studs and having the outer edge held up with threaded rod hanging down
from the ceiling attached to the roof beams. Any other ideas?
ANSWER: Take a look at the following link: http://www.bltllc.com/ Click on
"Products" then "KeepTrack Storage & Organization Systems". These were
featured on Ron Hazelton's "House Calls". That's all I know about them.
In my garage I took advantage of the space along the side of my car and
built (haven't quite finished yet) shelving out of 2X4s and plywood. I made
them 10' long, 2' deep and 8' high. There are 4 shelves spaced about 18"
apart. Basically, I built 4 rectangular frames (viewed horizontally) and
mounted them to 6 uprights. Two on each end and 2 in the middle. The
rectangles fit in to dadoes in the uprights. I cheated by using the garage's
cement block ledge at the rear of the shelving unit to support the back. In
other words, the uprights in the back rest upon the ledge whereas the ones
in the front go to the floor. Then I lag bolted the unit to the wall studs
through the rear uprights. All that was left was to top off each rectangular
frame with plywood.
This provides me with a lot of storage for bulky items, plus there is
additional space below the lowest shelf, which is the same height as the
cement block ledge. In fact, it actually rests upon it. One pointer though
is that if I were to build them again I'd only make them 8' long, so all the
lumber would match. Eight foot studs, 4 X 8 sheets of plywood etc. Rip the 4
X 8 in half lengthwise and there are 2 of your shelf tops. See what I mean?
Also in progress are plans for putting up old commercial "kitchen" cabinets
along any other wall that will take them. The ones that I acquired are very
tall and will utilize a lot of that wasted space up near the ceiling. This
is where you can store items that don't or won't lend themselves to open
storage. Many times you can get these just for the asking if you're able
cart them away right there and then.
You might be able to modify my shelf to work with your threaded rods.
Another thought would be to use angle iron to make a frame that could be
secured to the ceiling and top it off with plywood.
