water storage option
Basically, we would be taking a 6 foot long piece of 5 foot diameter
culvert (galvanized steel) and mounting it on a remesh reinforced base
QUESTION:One of the old timers in our area who happens to own a pipe and sulvert
supply business and some awesome dirt working equipment asked us about
our place design while he was digging a big hole for us. When we showed
him where we were planning on putting our catch water cistern he
suggested that we make it from culvert rather than cement or buying a
prefab tank.
Basically, we would be taking a 6 foot long piece of 5 foot diameter
culvert (galvanized steel) and mounting it on a remesh reinforced base,
sinking six inches or so of the culvert into the cement and
waterproofing the cement when dry. The cover would be made from a plate
of sheet steel cut to our specs. Sure, he would make a little money on
this but it still seems like it would save a lot of work and time for us
and probably be no more expensive than an underground prefab tank.
Any opinions?
ANSWER: I'm wondering how the Galvanized metal will react with your stored water
supplies, especially if you ever want to add any chlorine to the cistern for
sanitation.
I can see a rust issue developing with the steel end plates, and again a
chlorine issue with the oxidation of the steel as well.
Maybe you dont want the option of adding chlorine to your cistern supplies,
but if you ever do.... I have a question about how safe the galvanized
coating will be when exposed to an oxidizer.
It might be pretty toxic, and I bet someone here knows...... if not I will
look it up.
