I want to purchase another server or two. One for quickbooks only and
another for file storage only.
QUESTION:We have a SBS 2003 standard server. Its a Dell server, Celeron 2.4, with 2gig
of ram. On our server we use companyweb and exchange. I think it is to slow,
but it was free.
On a desktop computer we host quickbooks 2007 and share the file to others
allowed on the network that have access rights. I want to purchase another server or two. One for quickbooks only and
another for file storage only. So there would be three servers,
companyweb/exchange, quickbooks, and file storage. Is this necessary or can
everything be on one server, or would it be better to have it seperate. I
emagine the server would need to be pretty robust and I would definatly have
to purchase a new server. If setting up three different servers is the way to go, would I need to
install SBS on each server, since the exchange/companyweb server would still
be the main server. Would purchasing a NAS be better than implementing another server for
storage. Currently there is no storage being done on the server, all the
files are on the desktops of the users, I know its wrong and I want to make
it right but the boss is tight with money. If I were to redirect everything
onto the server it would slow the server down and it is already slow, plus
the backup takes forever as it is.
ANSWER: Companyweb and Exchange must be installed and run on the SBS 2003 server.
You have no options here. What I would do is buy only one more high end
server and migrate SBS 2003 to the new hardware http://www.sbsmigration.com
I would then reformat the old SBS 2003 server and use it for your Quick
Books and file storage although depending on the size and horsepower of your
new server it is quite possible to have everything on the SBS server.
