QUESTION:

While I have a grain storage bin inside my barn, I keep my horses outside nearly all the time and grow tired of hauling the buckets to the various pastures. I'd like to set up a few bins close to the fences so I can just scoop and dump into their pails. I checked at my feed store and he couldn't find anything suitable in his supplier catalogs and suggested that I get old freezers (they would be weather-proof, vermin-proof, not tip over, and have horsy-nose-proof latches, and be about the right size). My concern is that they would also be pretty darn ugly! Does anyone have any other suggestions?

ANSWER:

I would nix the freezer idea...I don't think they're weather proof. I just bought an old farmhouse on 5 acres and had to pay someone to haul off several old freezers from the pasture...they were all FULL of water. Plus if you ever want to get rid of them they are REALLY tough to dispose of these days, due to the freon content. You have to have an a/c person come out, drain the freon and tag them before landfills will take them.
I use plastic garbage cans to store my feed in the barn, and have had the same ones for quite a few years. I am sure you could find industrial versions of these (I have even seen some really big ones on wheels) that would be untippable and should work for your purpose. Rubbermaid has a whole line of farm products these days. Just be sure to rotate the feed so that you keep the oldest feed on top and don't keep pouring new feed on top of the older stuff -- and that they're horseproof if you're going to keep them where the critters can investigate!
