I know about dog training, but not alot about dog food and storage.
QUESTION:Is it possable to can dry dog food? (Home canning, not store cans...)
I was in a talk with a friend of mine and the subject of our dogs came
up. I most defanatly want to keep mine and so does he. I know about dog training, but not alot about dog food and storage. We were thinking of canning the dry food bu would the heat make the
food go bad?
We were thinking of the food needs of our dogs, and we can cook for
them... poultry, beef, rice, greens... we can do that... I was thinking of getting food grade 55 gal drums and filling them up
with dog food and then dropping in a water & O2 absorbing pads then
sealing it up.. somehow getting the air out via vaccum.
ANSWER: Cat and dog food generally lasts a year. It goes bad because the
oils in it get rancid and I've been told that vaccuuming won't
prevent rancidity of oils, though it's great for just about any-
thing else. Here's a recipe for dog biscuits that can be modified (trial and error) to make cat and dog food. Mine will be getting
leftovers that would go bad anyway due to lack of refrigeration
and then the homemade food for when there are no left overs.
Dog Biscuits (use a large bowl)
8 oz chicken broth (bullion cubes can be used)
1 cup non fat dry milk
2 tsp salt
1 egg, lightly beaten
1 cup whole wheat flour 1 1/4 cup all purpose flour 1/2 cup rye flour 1/4 cup plain cornmeal
3 tbsp parsley
1 tsp garlic powder 1/2 cup shredded cheese 1/4 cup warm water
Mix all well, turn onto board and knead several minutes. Dust board
with flour as needed to keep it from sticking. Let rest about 15
minutes. Either Roll 1/2 inch thick and cut out shapes or pull off
small lumps and mold into bone shapes.
Bake at 300F for approximately 45 minutes on oiled large sheet. Let
them cook and dry, at least a couple of hours. Store in airtight
container.
Obviously we may not have all of these ingredients, but this gives
a basic idea of how to do it. If we can't bake, I'll suspend it over
a fire or wood stove or whatever. For cat and dog food, I'll add some
meat. Things like leftover chicken/deer/fish parts that I don't want,
go in the pet food. Bullion can be made by boiling bones, it's good
for pets and people.
