I thought about a climate controlled self storage place, but for a 5x5 room, it is like $125 a month

QUESTION:

I will have to be playing my drums at home in my room. How can I keep it down? Someone said to put carpet on the walls, but this seems a little extreme for me. I wanted to keep the set in the garage, but there isn't much room in there because of my dad's boat and he won't get rid of it for my drums :) also I live in the south and during the summer the drums would probably melt out there. I thought about a climate controlled self storage place, but for a 5x5 room, it is like $125 a month. Too much for me, hell if I could save up that much money a month I could have bought better drums. So I am relegated to my room. During the day I'm ok, since no one gets home until around 3pm. But any later and they'll probably be bitching since they didn't want me to ge drums in the first place. Someone said to get a muffling system, but how do these sound? Will it still sound like my drums? Or will it sound like I'm playing on rubber or cardboard? Does anyone have any experience or suggestions?

ANSWER:

Q: I wanted to keep the set in the garage, but there isn't much room in there A: because of my dad's boat and he won't get rid of it for my drums Same as me again, except we've got a canoe; and a bunch of old garbage. Q: I thought about a climate controlled self storage place, but for a 5x5 room, it is like $125 a month. A: I thought about doing that too, but I backed off because even the closest one is too far to bike too, and it's expensive anyway. Q: During the day I'm ok, since no one gets home until around 3pm. But any later and they'll probably be bitching since they A: didn't want me to ge drums in the first place. I play my set anywhere from 12 noon to 7PM. I've been on that schedule since I started really playing this January. Not even the nieghbors have complained!! My dad was shocked (well, I was too) the day my brother just drove up one day with a set of drums for me (someone he knew apparently didn't want them anymore, so he gave them to me). My dad has complained about the noise, and he dosn't even work at home. My mom works at home, and she has NEVER complained. I guess it's because it's really something I enjoy, and she's happy it's physical. Regardind soundproofing, though, I can't REALLY help you... I heard having alot of large furniture, such as a bed or a couch, or a few matresses will absorb a lot of the sound. But carpeting a wall is a bit extreme. Try asking around if those Clear Sonic panels you see in magazines and stuff really work for small rooms. I haven't tried one and I don't really know if they'de be effective ina tiny room. In short tho, the best advice I could give you would just ask around what hours your neighbors aren't around, and tailor your hours to that. At night, fold up a towel and stick it on your snare, and you can bang away with NO volume, and you'll still get snare response. That or use brushes which are relatively quiet.
