I've been commissioned to build wine storage bins for a customer's wine
collection
QUESTION:I've been commissioned to build wine storage bins for a customer's wine
collection. The bins will be a combination of individual (for single
bottles, including magnums) and diamond (for cases). The "cellar" is vapor
sealed and temperature and humidity controlled. He wants the bins made
with KD heart redwood. To be honest, I've not worked with redwood except
for the occassional outdoor project . . . and it was not KD. Here in
Texas, KD redwood isn't stocked by most hardwood lumberyards.
A local yard will be able to deliver, sight unseen, 4/4 ($5.12 LF; 12"
wide) and 8/4 ($14.38 LF; 12" wide) dimensioned KD clear heart redwood. If
you have experience with clear heart redwood or "wine cellar" applications
with other types of wood, can you please email me any recommendations you
have.
The amount of money my client is spending on the bins (although to me quite
substantial) is insignificant compared to the value of the wines he will
store in them. Structural integrity is paramount.
ANSWER: just did wine storage racks for a liquor store in my area and during
the initial designing of the storage system my neighbor showed me a
catalog of pre-made wine racks, cellers, and accessories to help
stimulate design ideas, I just looked for it and can't find it but when
I do I'll post the name, anyways they had lots of stuff just pre-made,
and I know I'm bad but it, if you could just buy them already
fabricated and assemble and install them, adding a cut for yourself. On
the job I did the racks didn't have enough wine capacity, 2 deep I
think, (they can still be doubled up) so we went with a different
system, I know WineSpectator was one publication, if not, i think the
redwood at Home Depot is kiln dried, might have to sort through a few to
get the good ones,
