Anyone know how private a self-storage facility is? If I pay cash for the rent, is there any way for someone to trace it?

QUESTION:

Anyone know how private a self-storage facility is? If I pay cash for the rent, is there any way for someone to trace it? Since I don't want even my wife knowing about it (she can't keep a secret) there cannot be any sort of paper or computer trail leading to it. Guess I also have to get one of the mail box services that has a street address and suite number. Jeez, does that mean I have to get a phony id too? There will no firearms (I have great hiding places for them already), toxic chemicals, or anything else the storage folks may get upset about. I'd rather keep things clean and legal by using my real name and legit ID. Do any of the self-storage records ever get outside of the facility's file cabinet and into a traceable database of some kind? I've heard of "anonymous" self-storage facilities that work sort of like a swiss bank account. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find anything like that. I realize the risks of break-ins, fire, etc.in these places. Willing to take the risk if the storage is totally private.

A: You CAN get a bit carried away with this trying to be anonymous. To the point that you wind up attracting attention to yourself... A: I doubt it, so far. But I'm sure law enforcement will eventually try to get all storage facilities to automatically inform them of when someone rents a unit. A: If you want total privacy and the things you want to store aren't too large, just get some PVC pipe and caps, put your items inside and seal the pipe, then bury it where it will be safe and you'll be able to retrieve it if you need it. Perfect privacy
