But Wood Mag recently had an article about roll around shelf storage.

QUESTION:

Arg, thought I had things figured out for mobile storage of my small power tools ( router being the largest ) by using stacked full extension drawers (my shop is SPACE challenged). Key: Mobile, small tool storage But Wood Mag recently had an article about roll around shelf storage. So which would be better for storage of small power tools ? The shelf storage consisted of a main unit (on rollers) with two hinged deep doors that had a roller on the end of each door (I'll be darn if I can find the mag at the moment). Drawers:
+ Don't have to open the unit up to access the tools.
+ If you stack the shelves as close together as the drawers, it will be fairly difficult to get the back of the shelf
+ Easier to make it denser (more shelves / drawers per ft)
+ Easier to make it square shape (more stable on rollers)
+ Easier to support clamps on the outside
+ A shallow drawer, was planned to be used for router bits Shelf system:
+ Could make the shelves adjustable
(but the adjustability might take away from the strength)
+ Easier to support taller tools Could put circ saw on the bottom
+ Might be cheaper - drawer slides vs. shelf rails
+ When expanded allows for access to a lot surface area Minor Advantages (maybe)
+ Easier to build.. maybe (adjustable shelves or dado's will add work)
+ Supports usage of pegboard in the inside of the doors
+ Can be taller, but the top of the first shelf still can't be any higher than the top drawer Thoughts ? Other advantages ?

ANSWER:

Depends on where you need/use the tools. Mobile cabinets are key in my dinky shop, however the handheld tools need to travel to other areas/sites/shops/etc.. For me, mobile carts with adjustable shelves are the ticket. Drawers or slides would be overkill, since the tool will most likely be taken and carried elsewhere anyway. If however the tools will stay in the same shop space the vast majority of the time, then a mobile cabinet with drawers and/or simple slides would seem more attractive. Can't really go wrong as long as it's mobile, IMO.
