QUESTION:I am building a 58'x26' agricultural storage building in Hawaii where there
is salt air and volcanic ash. Building with steel roofing is common there
but with short life spans especially with cut edges.
Would appreciate and suggestions on the best brands.
ANSWER: Any brand from a chain store will be garbage. (metal/paint composition)
Under different naming schemes, you need a galvalume finished panel with
some type of kynar paint finish. Minimum 24~26 gauge, 22 if you can afford
it. Chain store is usually 28ga. & above. Crappolla!

Easiest solution to cut panels & rust is avoid a design that forces this
isssue. You can apply a zinc rich paint to the cut edges but it will fail
over time. (painting time =$$$$$$) Shearing works better then cutting, for
protection of edges. Custom order correct lengths to avoid field cutting. ($$$$$$$$$) If you need 22 lf of gable trim, order 2-10'ers & a 3'er. Just
more $$$$$$.Field use shears, nibblers & snips leave the cut edges raw as
opposed to shop sheared material. The shop sheared way tends to roll the
galvalume over the edge and protect it better. Although after you look at
the costs associated with getting what you desire to avoid the rust, yer
gonna ! Also use snaplock SSR roof panels instead of screw down,
although I prefer mechanically seamed SSRs'. But the seamer does sorta
grind/mar the paint. SSR=Standing Seamed Roof
