The agreement was that he would pay $1 per suitcase per day storage fee.

QUESTION:

If you keep your stuff in storage, you have to pay a fee. If you dont, eventually, your stuff will be sold. here is my case: A schitzo millionaire who owns real estate in NYC, had left 6 suitcases with my uncle in another country. The agreement was that he would pay $1 per suitcase per day storage fee. Needless to say, 1 year later, the man never paid up and now wants his suitcases back [refusing to even pay for their shipping]. My uncle had threatened to sell the suitcases, and all the stuff within them, unless he gets his $; which is what he eventually had done. Now the millionaire is harassing me at work, wants his $ for the value of the belongings, etc. I tell him to file a police report in the country where he left his stuff, or go to the proper embassy. Who is right here and how should I settle this?
[yes, I know this might be considered self-help, and it took place in another country, but was it legal?]

A: It sounds like there may be a factual issue here: i.e., your uncle thinks the "millionaire" agreed to pay the (rather high) fee of $6/day to store the suitcases, whereas the millionaire thinks your uncle agreed to store them for free. There may be a second factual issue: the "schitzo millionaire" may in fact be just plain "schitzo." (It does seem to me that a REAL millionaire would prefer to sheel out the bucks to store his stuff somewhere more secure than some random acquaintance's house. $180/month is enough to rent a storage bin just about anywhere in America.) The easiest way out of this mess would have been for your uncle to go ahead and ship the suitcases as requested, while politely asking his ex-friend to pay up. As things stand now, you would be wthin your rights to ask this guy to stop hassling you.
