I'm going to be storing a lot of my household belongings in a
self-storage unit.
QUESTION:I'm going to be storing a lot of my household belongings in a
self-storage unit. I really wanted one that was climate controlled, but
I couldn't find one, they were all full up and had long waiting lists.
So the one I have is basically a big unheated storage shed, and I have
my own little section. I am sure it will be very cold this winter (it's already below freezing here, and it can get below zero in Southern
NY) and hot when summer comes. (I'm hoping to move into a better
facility before summer, but I don't know if that will be possible).
So, what items should I definitely keep away from this storage unit?
Can I store things like stereo equipment, computer printer, kitchen
applicances, etc. there this winter? Should I wrap them up in any
special way to protect them from the cold? How about when hot weather
comes? I've already decided to keep my irreplacable photo albums with
me and not risk them, but are there any other definite items to avoid?
ANSWER: Cold won't hurt electronics. Heat is more of a problem. But the biggest
problem is the transitioning from heat to cold and back again. This can
create a moisture problem and also stresses the electronics by
expansion and contraction. So if you put your stuff in there, get it out
before spring. Thats my advice.
